Best Through My Eyes: Ruby Bridges

My name is Ruby Bridges, and I am a civil rights activist. I was born in Tylertown, Mississippi on September 8, 1954. My parents were sharecroppers who struggled to make ends meet. Despite the difficulties we faced, my parents instilled in me the importance of education. In 1960, at the age of six, I became the first African American child to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South. The experience was difficult, as I was subjected to harassment and threats from some of the white parents and students. But with the support of my family and community, I persevered and graduated from high school in 1971.

I went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Shaw University. I then worked for several years as a teacher and guidance counselor in New Orleans public schools. In 1999, I founded the Ruby Bridges Foundation, whose mission is to promote tolerance and create opportunities for everyday people to be extraordinary leaders.

Throughout my life, I have been shaped by my experiences as a young girl desegregating an all-white school. These experiences have taught me the importance of fighting for what is right, even when it is difficult. My hope is that through sharing my story, I can inspire others to stand up against discrimination and fight for equality for all people.

Benefits of Through My Eyes Ruby Bridges

In her new book, Through My Eyes, Ruby Bridges recounts the story of her courageous act as a six-year-old in 1960 when she became the first African American student to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South. Although she faced hateful words and even death threats from some parents and community members, Ruby’s strength and dignity under pressure helped set a lasting example of desegregation for our country.

Yet despite these groundbreaking accomplishments, Ms. Bridges says that she still sometimes struggles with self-doubt and feelings of invisibility. In an effort to help other young girls who may feel unseen or unimportant, Ms. Bridges established the Ruby Bridge Foundation which provides scholarships and mentoring opportunities to disadvantaged youth.
