My name is Darcey Bussell and I’m a former ballerina. I was born in London, England in 1969 and started dancing when I was just four years old. My mother was a professional dancer and my father was a musician, so dance was always a big part of my life. I trained at the Royal Ballet School and danced with The Royal Ballet from 1986 to 2007. During my career, I won many awards and became one of the most popular ballet dancers in the world. In 2012, I was named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for my services to dance.

I retired from ballet in 2007 but continue to be involved in the dance world as a producer, judge, and coach. In 2017, I published my autobiography, Dancing Through It: My Triumph over Cancer, which chronicles my battle with breast cancer and how dance helped me heal.

Dancers are often on their toes, but what does it mean to dance “on pointe”?

To dance on pointe is to dance on the tips of your toes. This technique is used in ballet to create the illusion of floating across the stage. It takes a lot of strength and technique to dance on pointe, and it is considered one of the most challenging aspects of ballet.

When a dancer is on pointe, they are supported by the strength of their ankles and the muscles in their feet. They must maintain a strong balance while keeping their limbs light and airy. Toes are not the only body part that touch the floor when a dancer is on pointe; the balls of their feet also bear some weight.

Dancers start to train for pointe work around the age of 12 or 13. They first learn to execute simple movements on demi-pointe (half-toe), before progressing to full pointe work. It is important that dancers take the time to slowly build up their strength and technique, as pointe work can be very demanding on the body.

Dancing on pointe is a signature aspect of ballet, and it is what sets this art form apart from other styles of dance. When
