In My Fair Lady, Professor Henry Higgins attempts to transform a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, into a lady by teaching her proper English speech and etiquette. Though the film is set in Edwardian London, it actually takes its story from George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, which was first staged in 1916. In both the play and film, Higgins is a professor of phonetics who makes a bet with a friend that he can successfully pass off Eliza as a duchess at an upcoming ball.

Higgins begins his project by teaching Eliza how to speak with a refined accent, which requires her to enunciate her words more clearly and to speak in a higher register.
